How’s everyone doing in the new year? My first project this year is Pyrography, engraving characters into wood with heat, also known as wood-burning. Wood-burning projects are simple and fun for everybody.

今年の私の最初のプロジェクトは焼き絵、
つまり熱で木材に文字を彫刻をしようと思っています。
ウッドバーニングは、比較的に簡単で
誰にでも楽しんで頂けるクラフトです。
必要な道具は、非常にシンプルで
扱いやすいです。
電熱ペンは非常に熱くなるので、
作業を開始する前に作業できるスペースを
十分に確保し、火事や火傷をしないように
注意してください。
すでに、はんだごて、または安い電熱ペンを
お持ちの場合は、お持ちの道具で簡単な
作品作りを開始することが十分可能です。
The tools are pretty simple and easy to handle. The tools get quite hot, so make sure to clear the workspace before starting and be careful not to burn yourself or things you don’t want to burn. If you already have a soldering iron or a cheap wood burning tool, you can start small pieces with them. Just be aware that most of them don’t have the controller for adjusting the temperature and there is not much to protect your fingers, so you may want to use leather gloves or leather finger-sleeves, so your fingers don’t get too hot while you are working on the piece. The distance between the handle and the tip of the burner is crucial too. If it’s too long, it’ll be hard to write or draw. Begin by doodling on scrap of wood and you’ll soon get a feel for it.

熱くなるようでしたら、革手袋か
革の指サックを使用した方が
良いかもしれません。
グリップとバーナーの先端の間の距離が
どれ位いあるかにも注意してください。
長すぎると、文字や絵を描くことが
難しくなります。
木片で何回かテストしてみれば、
すぐに感覚がつかめるようになると思います。
Wood smells nice when you burn it. If you look around in your house, you can probably find free materials on which to practice. You can start with simple cheap tools. Anyone can be creative with wood burning. Enjoy creating! I’ll post more updates as my project progresses.
安くて簡単な道具からでも始められますし、
練習用の材料も、家の中を見回せば
何かしら見つけられるでしょう。
作業中は、木の焼ける良いにおいが楽しめます。

I engraved words on wooden spoons this week. The beech wood was soft and didn’t have so many grains. It was easy to work with. I can’t wait to use them when I drink my morning coffee! I’m thinking of more words for this project. Hmm, what would be a good word for these homey spoons…

I’m burning words into wooden spoons for my friends and family now. When I’m engraving I think about them. That makes me smile.
For my friends, I engraved their names in kanji.
Grandpa and grandma wanted the titles of old jazz standards.
An actor friend of mine is going to get some poetry from Edgar Allen Poe.
Maybe a spoon with a little bunny engraved on it will get a little kid to eat his vegetables.
